Within Walking Distance

One of the most misapplied statments in the English language.

‘. . . a cozy little bed and breakfast within walking distance of downtown shops . . .’ Think: A three mile hike over back fields with rabid dogs chasing at your heels.

‘ . . . just a short walk from the metro station . . .’ Think: toiling up a one-way street with no sidewalk while carrying bags full of hardback books.

‘ . . . our new terminal constructed within walking distance of the main airfield . . . ‘ Think: a long hike over hot tarmac with a suitcase that won’t roll and airplanes buzzing over your head.

Whenever something is advertised as ‘within walking distance’ I take out cash for the taxi or lace up my sneakers.  Better bring an umbrella, too.
