We’re delighted to announce the arrival ofÂ the firstÂ egg fromÂ our spring chicks!

We recently looked up the age that we could expect eggs, and figured theses pullets wouldn’t lay ’til the middle of August, so this was a fun surprise.Â Of course, they couldn’t be accommodating and lay it in their nesting box…that would be sensible and chickens aren’t big on the wholeÂ sensible thing.Â They chose a much better spot for their egg.

Behind a bunch of tools stacked in a corner of the workshop!Â I’m thinking we should give them something similar in their coop, and see if a couple of golf balls can coax them into tryingÂ the new nest.

wow, i didn’t know hens laid eggs so fast! as for where it laid its egg, i think the peculiarities of the household rubs off on its inhabitants ;).

Lol, that’s right? Why am I blaming the chicken, when clearly it’s been subjected to extraordinary circumstances and can’t be blamed if it wants a double-handful of sharp tools protecting its egg!

These are a type of red sex-linked, and beyond that it depends on how the hatchery names them. What we think they are is Rhode Island White x Rhode Island Reds. They’re about 18 weeks old. They’re supposed to be great layers, even through the winter. Guess we’ll see!

plastic golf balls would easily crack but those that are made from ABS Plastic are great ~
