Fusain >n. a crumbly, porous type of coal resembling wood charcoal, used in drawing.

–Origin late 19th cent.: from French, literally ‘spindle tree,’ also ‘fine charcoal’ (made from the spindle tree). 

Kaffiyeh >n. a Bedouin Arab’s kerchief worn as a headdress.

–Origin early 19th cent.: from Arabic keffiyya, kufiyya. 

Longshore drift >n. the movement of material along a coast by waves that approach at an angle to the shore but recede directly away from it.
