This Week in Words (11-13-06)

This is rolling in a day late, but better late than never . . .  

Anachronism >n. a thing belonging or appropriate to a period other than in which it exists, esp. a thing that is conspicuously old-fashoined: everything was as it would have appeared in centuries past apart from one anachronism, a bright yellow construction crane.

–an act of attributing a custom, event, or object to a period which it does not belong.

Beleaguer >v. lay siege to: he is leading a relief force to the aid of the beleaguered city.

–beset with difficulties: the board is supporting the beleaguered director amid calls for his resignation.

Chiasmus >n. a rhetorical or literary figure in which words, grammatical constructions, or concepts are repeated in reverse order, in the same or a modified from; e.g. ‘Poetry is the record of the best and happiest moments of the happiest and best minds.’ 

Rue >v. bitterly regret (something one has done or allowed to happen) and wish it undone: Ferguson will rue the day he turned down that offer / she might live to rue this impetuous decision.

>n. archaic repentance; regret: with rue my heart is laden.

–compassion; pity: tears of pitying rue.
