A not in the least biographical piece. Â If only because I haven’t got the power… 😉
I kicked the cloud in front of me, sending it rolling across the sky and leaving it bruised and stormy–just like I felt. Â Without waiting for it to stop, I stomped through another cluster of clouds, scattering them like fluffy sheep. Â Too bad I couldn’t make Linda and her friends scatter in the same way. Â The nerve of her! Â Holding a party right outside my doors, on my very own island, and not inviting me?
As I glared around, a series of blobby clouds seemed to take on the form of Linda and her friends, so I kicked those, too.
Boom! Â Bam, boom! Â They tumbled over the bank of lighter clouds, spreading purple and grey shadows as they went. Â Two rolling clouds smashed into each other, and a lightning dragon woke with a flash of his forked tongue.
I grinned, enjoying the exuberance, the clashing giving release to my pent up feelings.
A swirl of stormy air twisted around me and I twirled with it, laughing. Â Let Linda have her clique of friends, in their sunny ribbons of light and cheery picnic dresses. Â I had the sky!
Flopping back on the clouds, I closed my eyes, and released my angry energy. Â The clouds took it, swelling. Â The lightning dragon rolled it into balls and chased them, thundering. Â And the storm grew.
I smiled.
From below me, so far away they were almost an echo, I heard shrieks of anger. Â One shriek almost sounded like Linda, almost like my name…oh, no!
I peeked through a hole in the clouds, and looked down on a scene of devastation. Â The picnic flowers had drooped and fallen, the food was tumbled every which way and wet, the guests huddled under umbrella trees. Â And Linda was glaring up at me, her hands on her hips.
Oops. Â I had told her she could use the island, even if I’d resented her asking. Â Said the weather would be fair. Â Now I’d rained all over her party! Â And she did not look happy about it.
Sighing, I set about soothing the clouds, speaking to them of cool breezes out over the ocean, of wisping trails of wind. Â The storm calmed, and the air began to clear…but that would not restore Linda’s picnic.
In a burst of inspiration, I gathered up the last of the dewdrop-heavy air and tossed it out across the sky, sending with it my good wishes and a blessing on both Linda and her friends. Â I had to dig deep for the feeling, but found it there.
The droplets scattered across a sunbeam, and a blaze of color burst forth. Â Arcing across the sky, the rainbow dazzled and danced with brilliance.
Linda’s guests forgot their dripping hair and damp dresses, and clapped their hands, laughing. Â Running out from under their cover, they danced in the light of my rainbow.
I smiled, and just before I turned away, Linda looked up and smiled back.
Today’s flash piece was inspired by the sudden storm that stole my walk. Â But, I used it to ‘rewrite my day’ and give myself a rainbow, instead. Â Because only with a storm can we have rainbows, and that makes them worth it, in my book!
And of course, I gave it a twist, because why wouldn’t I? 😉
