Stormy Friendship

A not in the least biographical piece.  If only because I haven’t got the power… 😉

I kicked the cloud in front of me, sending it rolling across the sky and leaving it bruised and stormy–just like I felt.  Without waiting for it to stop, I stomped through another cluster of clouds, scattering them like fluffy sheep.  Too bad I couldn’t make Linda and her friends scatter in the same way.  The nerve of her!  Holding a party right outside my doors, on my very own island, and not inviting me?

As I glared around, a series of blobby clouds seemed to take on the form of Linda and her friends, so I kicked those, too.

Boom!  Bam, boom!  They tumbled over the bank of lighter clouds, spreading purple and grey shadows as they went.  Two rolling clouds smashed into each other, and a lightning dragon woke with a flash of his forked tongue.

I grinned, enjoying the exuberance, the clashing giving release to my pent up feelings.

A swirl of stormy air twisted around me and I twirled with it, laughing.  Let Linda have her clique of friends, in their sunny ribbons of light and cheery picnic dresses.  I had the sky!

Flopping back on the clouds, I closed my eyes, and released my angry energy.  The clouds took it, swelling.  The lightning dragon rolled it into balls and chased them, thundering.  And the storm grew.

I smiled.

From below me, so far away they were almost an echo, I heard shrieks of anger.  One shriek almost sounded like Linda, almost like my name…oh, no!

I peeked through a hole in the clouds, and looked down on a scene of devastation.  The picnic flowers had drooped and fallen, the food was tumbled every which way and wet, the guests huddled under umbrella trees.  And Linda was glaring up at me, her hands on her hips.

Oops.  I had told her she could use the island, even if I’d resented her asking.  Said the weather would be fair.  Now I’d rained all over her party!  And she did not look happy about it.

Sighing, I set about soothing the clouds, speaking to them of cool breezes out over the ocean, of wisping trails of wind.  The storm calmed, and the air began to clear…but that would not restore Linda’s picnic.

In a burst of inspiration, I gathered up the last of the dewdrop-heavy air and tossed it out across the sky, sending with it my good wishes and a blessing on both Linda and her friends.  I had to dig deep for the feeling, but found it there.

The droplets scattered across a sunbeam, and a blaze of color burst forth.  Arcing across the sky, the rainbow dazzled and danced with brilliance.

Linda’s guests forgot their dripping hair and damp dresses, and clapped their hands, laughing.  Running out from under their cover, they danced in the light of my rainbow.

I smiled, and just before I turned away, Linda looked up and smiled back.

Rainbow--full

Today’s flash piece was inspired by the sudden storm that stole my walk.  But, I used it to ‘rewrite my day’ and give myself a rainbow, instead.  Because only with a storm can we have rainbows, and that makes them worth it, in my book!

And of course, I gave it a twist, because why wouldn’t I? 😉

What I wouldn’t give for that kind of influence! Love both your rainbows, and the reminder that you might as well enjoy the storm beforehand, too, and get the most out of all of it :).

The voice in this is so original and exuberant. A true emotional arc that captures the flow of weather wonderfully. I’ve always had ambivalent reactions to storms- the attraction and aversion almost set me vibrating. Your piece today did the same.
    Brava!

Thank you, Sandy! Storms are pretty intense, though clearly I enjoy them. 😉 I love the way flash pieces give me a chance to spend a little time in a new character and try out a different voice. I’m glad this worked for you!

Wess, I rarely can remember what a sermon was about. If it changed me, it’s because I was attentive to the word that came obliquely through an evocative phrase or story or scripture, and worked on my “sanctified im81niation&#a22g; in the gathered meeting. The sermon “opened up a space”, to use your words. Blessings on your undertaking.Tom
