Hummingbird Wars

Our two hummingbird feeders have attracted two hummingbirds so far this spring.  As the feeders are quite a ways apart, one might think that this would mean we’d have one hummingbird at each feeder, right?

Wrong!

What we have is non-stop aerial battles over territory.  I sometimes wonder if any actual drinking gets done, as no sooner does a hummingbird show up to sip then the other is going in for a dive bomb.

The interesting thing is that unlike the other birds coming into our seed feeders, they show no concern over us humans.   We can sit out on the deck and hear the beating of their wings, the sounds they make, and the whoosh in the air as they go through their acrobatics, all without their taking notice of us.

I’m grateful to them, for that, even if they only grant me this boon because my existence is insignificant to them.  I’ll take what favors I can get.
