I’ve worked quickly this last week to finish all my more urgent class work before the trip. My plan is to give myself this week to get a couple of short stories written, and to that end I’ve been fleshing out a few story ideas.
The only problem is, the outlines sound more like novels than shorts. I’ve noticed that the more time I spend on a story, the more likely it will end up on the longish side. In fact, my most successful short stories (especially at staying short) were very isolated concepts which I wrote at deadline.
Still, maybe I could write up a quick short and then see how one of these longer concepts wants to develop. I’m positively itching to get back to longer work. I haven’t attempted a novel in seven or eight years–as good as forever, by writing standards.
Wonder what the family would think if I turned our vacation into a writing retreat… 😉
