WOTF Awards and Chit Chat

The wotf blog has some good info and a couple pictures of the ceremony.  I’ve been keeping an eye on the blog, and it sure sounds like the winners had a great time.

Congrats to winning Gold illustrator Lorraine Schleter and Gold writing winner Stephen Kotowych.  They both seem delighted.

It was great to catch glimpses of the workshop, and has also inspired me to make my next entry the best yet.  I’ve had two quarter finalists (or honorable mentions) and one which was a complete wash.  I haven’t heard back on Way of the Priestess yet, but it’s been long enough I’m bracing myself for another total miss.

Drat.

At least it’s not long between quarters, so there’s always another chance.  Must remind myself to write a winning story next time. 😛

Hey Suanne. Don’t give up hope on your last sub just yet.

FWIW, in my entering-15-times-experience, I usually hear back 10-12 weeks after each deadline, sometimes longer, sometimes sooner, but I don’t think I’ve _ever_ heard back this early. And usually they send out non-placers first, then quarter-finalists/honorable mentions, then semi-finalists, and then finalists, with the winning stories among the finalists announced 3+ months after that. So the longer it takes (as with many markets), the better your story _could be_ doing.

Last quarter was a weird exception which I hope they repeat: announcing the finalists on the blog two months after the deadline, before they even notify anybody else. So those of us not on that list were free to send our stories elsewhere.

    Alex. (6 washes, 6 quarter-Fs, 2 semi-Fs, 1 pending)

Thanks, Alex. I guess it was the topsy-turvy nature of last quarter that’s to blame for my pessimism. See, I didn’t hear back for ages, but I knew that I hadn’t won because of the blog, but also because my entry last quarter was so obviously not their thing that it was more of a dammit-I-will-send-a-story entry than a bonafide attempt to win.

And while this entry (Way of the Priestess) was a nice try on my part, I’ve since concluded that it was too heavy-handed to be a real contestant.

Still…I’ll leave a very small hope burning. Just to make sure I don’t faint dead away if it does get noticed. 😉
