The Laundry Thing

What is it about laundry?  No single item of clothing is too heavy for an old lady to carry, so it can’t very well be considered hard labor.  We buy gleaming machines that take our clothes for a ride and spit them out warm and fuzzy.  The soaps and scrubbies come in such a variety that every laundry-palate can be satisfied.

So what is it about laundry that makes it such a bothersome chore?

I’m sure there are many people alive today who can remember scrubbing their clothes in some old-fashioned tub, heck, there may be some who still do.  I personally can remember going out to hang clothes on the line, letting them blow dry on windy days or ‘freeze dry’ in the cold.

So what is it about laundry?

It piles up in gigantic heaps and breeds little piles behind the doors and in corners of the closets.  These baby piles will resist any attempt to reclaim them or sort them by color, often enlisting the help of warrior dust bunnies if an unsuspecting laundry-bent human comes by.

Because no matter what technology we throw at the problem, or how we try to organize ourselves into laundress heaven, the laundry will always be waiting to make a come-back, and always growing.
