A Tribute to Apricot-kitty

The best of all kitties (because we all know there can be more than one best kitty) has left this life. With typical Apricot self possession, she was perfectly healthy and happy right up until her last day. This made her sudden rapid decent pretty awful for me and the family, but I’m so grateful for her sake that the end was fast. Truly, on her last full day she was still nudging the younger cats out of the prime new bed, and quick to demand one tidbit of cheese. I’m so grateful that she lived a happy, full life and that she shared her particular brand of kitty opinions with everyone who met her. She was big hearted, affectionate, and always knew her own mind. So long as everyone was cool with her view, she was cool with them.

As a final post from her, here are a few of Apricot-kitty’s snarkiest thoughts from when she was a regular on the blog, and always happy to temper my book enthusiasm with her own particular insights:

“Aren’t you forgetting someone? How well would the girls have survived without [the cat] My Lord? There are at least two pivotal moments in the book when My Lord provided absolutely essential help which they girls could not have gotten by without.”

“You–you want to know what I thought of this mouse-ridden book? You’re kidding, right? I’m afraid I very much side with the rats, and believe the best thing for that mouse was if someone swallowed him down in one gulp. And while we’re on the subject of dinner, the foolish king could have quickly rid his dungeon of rats if he’d brought in a few sturdy cats. We prefer mice, but most of us would be happy to help him with his rat problem–and without any of that soup nonsense!”

“If I had a time machine, I’d go back and give a good scratching to anyone who threatened that jug of milk. Firstly because they were often idiots, and secondly because they endangered the precious milk deliciousness. Utterly unpardonable, I tell you!”

Thank you all for loving her and sharing in her life here on the blog. If you have a cat in your life–or have had a cat–feel free to share a funny or favorite cat moment, with or without a pic. And if you have access to a cat…give them a little extra love, from me.

Share, share away:

Oh, Suzanne, this is such a loving and revealing tribute to an incomparable cat/family member/friend. Apricot Kitty will be missed by readers, but surely not as much as by your family. it is heartwarming to know that she was able to be her full self for nearly every moment of her life. I appreciate that you shared the news with readers here.
Deepest sympathy in this loss, but celebrations for the lives you shared together.
    Hugs,

I remember seeing your posts a while ago and being quite entertained by Apricot-kitty’s delightful comments, and I am very sorry to hear that she passed away—it sounds like she was a wonderful companion to you and your family. I appreciate you sharing her comments and photos (the 3rd photo seems so meme-able—perhaps someone should add a funny caption and allow her to live on in perpetuity!)—thank you for the wonderful post, Suzanne!

I am so sorry for your loss. I will miss the pithy comments from Apricot Kitty. Thanks for this lovely tribute to her. I’m glad her end was quick and painless. I just had to have my dog put down after a long uncomfortable time for him.

I’m so sorry about your dog, Rosi! Losing pets is really one of those things that’s just mind-bogglingly difficult, and so much harder than is often realized. Thank you for the sympathy and hugs to you in your loss!

It is very hard to lose a pet– it’s losing a bit of yourself. The first few weeks are hard, because it seems like Apricot Kitty should be just around the corner. Thanks for sharing, and I’m so sorry for your loss.

That’s extremely well put–it’s just like losing a bit of myself. I’m grateful I have my other two cats, which help with the feeling of a missing kitty just around the corner. Thank you for they sympathy and understanding!
