Facebook Names

I’ve noticed that many of my FB friends use their entire name for their FB profile.  This is helpful in finding friends from one’s past, and relatives from both sides of the family.  Of course, it also puts a woman’s maiden name out on the internet, assuming she changed it when she married.  Given the relative (in)security of FB information, I wonder what the ramifications of this will be in future generations.

Right now, one easy way a bank, for example, can ID you over the phone is ask you your mother’s maiden name.  It’s not the kind of thing that the average Joe ID thief has access to, but not the kind of thing individuals are likely to forget, either.  Will they fill the same security applies to our children, if all of Mom’s 1,416 FB friends (and anyone who’s hacked the site) know her maiden name?  I’ll be curious to see.

See, I was worried about this, but tried to put it out of my mind. Maybe I need to reconsider! I’m not seeing too many pros to FB anyway.

You guys are making me laugh–this was just something that occurred to me, the kind of thing that would make good story fodder.

Amy, if you’re worried about it, you could always put up an account without your maiden name–though I also understand sometimes stepping back to consider if FB is a net positive!
