This is official notice to all Hawks, Owls, Turkey Vultures, and Eagles that the Backyard Chicken Buffet is now closed.

We’re down to only one chicken at this point, and fear we must ask our valued customers to find some other easy meal while we rebuild our stock.

  We have been, and it’s been wonderful. Until the local predators of the sky decided they could just sit in our backyard and wait for a chicken to walk by!
  
  I feel sorry for the last lonely one, but at least she’s learned caution and knows to run quick to hide under the deck or in the coop. She’s also a great egg layer, which some of the others were not, so I suppose there’s that to be grateful for. 🙂

I guess I didn’t realize that a full sized chicken could be picked off so easily by a passing bird of prey. A chick, sure. But a hen???

  Yeah, we had to see it to believe it. Once we started looking around online, though, we found it’s a commom problem for chicken keepers. The solution we’re going with (when we get more chicks in the spring) is raising a turkey or two with them and some guinea fowl, as well. Apparently those birds have better survival insitincts and will watch out for the bird brained chickens. 🙂
