We’ve had several days of gray and rain rain rain, but today the sun is shining from a clear blue sky. The trees are blazing in reds and yellows, looking like miniature suns themselves, and I’m thinking about sun worship.
Days like this, it’s easy to see how and why it came to be. The sun provides warmth and the energy for plants to grow, but it also gives us a nice boost of vitamin D, which can help fight cancers, and it feels good. It is only in recent years that people became sunphobic and spend so much time indoors. Throughout history people have associated the sun with Gods and worshipped the sun in many countries. Even in Christianity there are many references to Jesus as the giver of life and light, like the sun.Â
Most people will agree that a burning hot sun in the summer is not much fun, but getting out in pleasant weather, especially in the non-summer months, can improve mood and open the mind to creative thought. Some people even experience Winter Depression, or SAD during the long days of winter darkness.
I love the sun in winter, especially with fresh snow to sled on, but spring and fall will always be my favorite seasons, with summer time at the beach coming in close behind.Â
And on that note, you’ll have to excuse me. I’m heading out to soak up some sun.
