What is the point of daylight savings again? And since when is daylight something we can ‘save’ up? Here’s a link to a Slate report on what’s behind the clock changes. Daylight savings is supposed to get us up with the sun so we’ll use less energy, but there doesn’t seem to be much evidence to back up the theory.
What I do know is that suddenly changing sleep patterns is hard on the body and reduces productivity, at least for the short term, as stated in this article in Medical News Today. Of course, they point out that this can be avoided by making the adjustment in incremental steps in the week prior–but how many of us have ever managed to do that?
Personally I don’t think they can know that any energy is saved, given the diverse factors involved and the impact that change can make on people’s habits. But then, I’m probably biased by my pounding, sleep-disruption induced headache.
