An arthurian urban fantasy by Peter David, Knight Life is about the return of King Arthur to modern day New York, and his subsequent political campaign for the mayorship.
I wouldn’t say it was a can’t-put-it-down read, but once I set it down I was sure to look around and find I’d picked it up again. The politcal humor had a nice edge and was universal to all major campaigns, not just NYC. The fusion of the archaic mindset and the modern mode of thinking was well-handled and amusing. The action was fast enough and the plot, while not exactly knotted, still had some nice twists. But the characters’ interactions, especially the pairings of Morgan and Merlin, Gwen and Lance, are the real strength of the book. Witty dialogue and quick, keen illustrations of human nature.
I recommend it as a great beach book or a novel to slip in your carry-on the next time you fly.
