Election Day

Today has been a bit crazy.  Or maybe it’s the last several days.  This past weekend had all our usual Saturday errands, etc., plus attending Alan Welch’s gallery showing (which was very cool and will get a longer post on the LJ) and doing some measuring on the windows of our old house in order to take care of Home Inspection details.  There’s a tiny water mark where the seal has broken on the big picture window in the family room, so the whole thing needs to be replaced.  Ideally before closing, but that may not be what happens.

But just to start the weekend off properly, and on Halloween, as well, our son had a get together with a friend of his from school.  I knew the boy, but hadn’t met the mom ’til Friday.  Well…for lack of a better way to put it, she’s got issues.  Only that should be capital ‘I’ Issues.

She’s obviously a very attentive mother, and wants all the best for her son, but she has a hard time dealing with people.  She can’t hold a conversation–or even be sure if she’s had a conversation with you five minutes after it takes place–can’t hold still, talks to herself in a low monotone, and prefers to never use the phone.  To name off what’s obvious on the tip of the iceberg.

I can work with that–she has my sympathy–but it makes every interaction a long, complex dance in which I try as hard as I can to understand her, despite the sudden jumps in the conversation, and hope that in the end we’ve actually communicated.  I really don’t want to drop the ball, either, so I feel the need to double-check everything and even then worry that she won’t really have understood.

So, that’s a long-winded way to say that our son’s study-date with his friend this afternoon was more complicated than it seems like it should be.  But I baked cookies, and the boys worked up an inventive storm, and we got him home when his mom expected, so that was a success.

Of course, it was also almost 7:00pm, so dinner was a fast affair, then the kids had ‘mis-placed’ one of the ferrets, and when he was found the hooligans still needed to get to bed.

I did eventually get down to the basement, to my writing spot.  And I did eventually manage to hammer out the 2,000 words I owed tonight.  But the election?  Hardly even on the radar.  I did vote, earlier, but will I stay up to see the results?

Hmm…how’s this for an answer–

ZZZzzzzzz…. 😉

Let me know in the morning.  It won’t have changed during the night.
