The Munching Hours

Many people go for midnight snacks, but for me it’s mid-day.  Any time in the middle of the day.

I sit at my desk, writing away, and soon I get a little bored, or sleepy, or restless.  That’s when the snack attack hits.

Now, I know the danger of at-the-desk scarfing, and since I firmly believe that a healthy body will enhance my writing (or at least let me live longer) I fortify myself against these boredom-induced cravings.

I buy water bottles by the case loads.  I run up and down the stairs, or go for a walk.  And when I’m really desperate, I get out my blueberries and almonds.

Not just any blueberries.  They have to be the Stoneridge ones sold at Sam’s, since these may be dried but don’t taste it.  The almonds are Blue Diamond, so they’re free from peanut traces.  For this purpose I like the roasted and salted variety.

Then I dump some out on my desk and sort them; two blueberries per almond.  Sometimes they don’t come out evenly, in which case I either eat the numbers back to this 2:1 ratio, or pick some tiny blueberries to count as “one.”

Then I eat them.

The sweet, softness of the blueberry mingles with the crunchy-nut flavor of the almond.  Mmmm.  Satisfaction.
